Poverty and wealth inequality are significant challenges in Mexico. About 18% of the country lives in extreme poverty, and among rural communities, school dropout rates, absences, and grade repetition are serious problems.

Through the program that is administered in conjunction with Project Amigo, students and parents learn to understand the value of education and a pathway for a better future early on.

The GROW Program offers girls and young women the resources necessary to continue their education, from middle school through college.

One load a week of bananas goes a long way, and we’re not just talking about nutrition. Part of the proceeds from GROW bananas are used to fund Project Amigo in Mexico.

Dulce was a GROW scholar who graduated from the University of Colima with a degree in graphic design in 2015. As the fourth of six children, she grew up in poverty. Her father owned a butcher shop and her mother took care of the children.

Bananas make a tasty snack at any time of the day or night. And while we love their soft texture and sweet taste as-is, there’s always room for an upgrade! Here’s an easy way to caramelize bananas to use in breakfasts, desserts, and snacks.

Alejandra was one of the first GROW university graduates, earning a degree in International Relations in 2012. Today, at 29, she is living independently and is part of the internal audit team for one of the largest supermarket chains in Mexico, in charge of the northwestern region from Michoacán to Tijuana.

What’s one fruit you always keep stocked in your kitchen? For us, it’s the banana! Nature’s grab-and-go snack is perfect for busy breakfasts or packed lunches, and it’s just as good for cooking into sweet and tasty recipes. We always keep a bunch hanging on our fruit basket!

The global pandemic has changed life as we know it. Virtually every facet of our day-to-day activities has been altered. Before the pandemic, GROW sent funds to organizations such as Project Amigo in Mexico and Children International in Ecuador for educational and medical purposes.
